I installed TestGen 7.4, but my firefox has started to close randomly...

I installed TestGen 7.4 and took a practice test. Everything loads correctly, but my browser (Firefox 3.0.11) shut down in the middle of the test three times at seemingly random intervals.
As long as I select 'restore previous session' when I try to restart Firefox, my answers are saved and so is my time spent in the test, but it sure is annoying to keep restarting my browser.
I'm a little nervous to take the actual test, since we only get one attempt...any clue how I can fix this?

I'm going to copy and paste my hardware overview from system profiler so you know what I'm running this on...
Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz

I'm running Leopard and the most current version of Firefox. I hope you can help me...meanwhile, I'm going to go take the other practice test on Safari and see how that works. I enabled Rosetta on both browsers. I just really prefer Firefox.

Thank you so much for your help...or if you can't help, for taking the time to try!

TestGen Forums:

Hey...OP here...I just tried taking a practice test in Safari and had the same issue, but since it is not as simple to restore my unexpectedly ended session in that particular browser, I'm sticking with Firefox. My test is due tomorrow night, but I'm going to try and take it now and maybe we can fix this before the next one is due in a week...
Thanks!
Cait

I am having the same problem. I cannot complete my homework because my browser keeps quitting suddenly. On multipart questions I cannot complete the whole question before my browser quits, so my response is not saved and I cannot move on to the next question. My homework is a large part of my grade, I don't know what to do if I cannot complete my assignments. I have cookies and pop-ups allowed and I am using Firefox which is the recommended browser and when I run the browser check it says TestGen is successfully installed. My operating systems is 10.5.7. The browser check shows TestGen 7.4 is installed. I have Rosetta enabled. I have tried reinstalling TestGen and it still does not work. If anyone knows what to do please help.

Ok, some questions...

1) What CMS are you using?

2) Does it crash on one particular question or "seem" random.

3) Does it crash if you "thumb" through the questions (don't answer them, just hit next/previous through all of them)?

4) Does Safari also crash?

Jeff

What CMS are you using? Are you taking a MathXL test? The TestGen plug-in does not store session information; that is, if you crash a TestGen plug-in test you have to start over. So, I am not confident that you are actually using the TestGen plug-in for this particular test.

Jeff

It crashes during random intervals when doing homework problems in both Safari and Firefox. I have also had problems with crashing during quizzes although not as often. The plug in just generates the test, the the answers and results to all test and homework are saved by the site being used for the course so the instructor can grade. If you get to complete the question your answer is saved and you can move on to the next question. If your browser keeps quitting in the middle of questions you have to do them over when you restart the browser because the answers never got saved. I tried contacting tech support for the site that I have to use for my math class, they keep telling me to reinstall testgen. I have reinstalled it multiple times now and the results are the same.

What course management system are you using (MathXL, CourseCompass, etc)?

Jeff

Well the site I login at is Course Compass, when a page is loading it says transferring data from MathXL.

Still having the same problem, even after the Firefox 3.5 upgrade.
I noticed something, though. Not well-versed enough in the software to know if this could be REALLY causing my issue, but it seems to.
When I have Rosetta enabled and I'm taking a TestGen test, I don't have any problems.
If I have Rosetta enabled and I'm taking a non-TestGen test, that is when my browser closes.
During the test I just took, I had to restore my session so many times that even Firefox was embarrassed (no seriously, it brought up a screen that was titled 'Well, this is embarrassing.' I restarted 11 times. It was ridiculous.
I don't have this problem on homework, but that doesn't use TestGen. I only turn Rosetta on when I'm going to take a test - but have no way of knowing whether a test will use TestGen or not before I start it.
I am using CourseCompass, which loads MathXL (like the Anonymous person), and it makes Firefox quit seemingly randomly. I have the most current version of everything :( I just wish they would play nicely together.

Oh yeah, and I still have the same problem with Safari. >.< This glitch does not discriminate! :(

We just released a new, "Universal" TestGen Plug-in that may solve all these problems. Please try the following:

  1. Download the TestGen Plug-in v7.5 from Pearson.
  2. Quit your web browser.
  3. Disable Rosetta on your browser.
  4. Uncompress the downloaded file and run the installer.
  5. Verify you are running the new, v7.5 TestGen Plug-in.
  6. Test it.

Please let me know one way or the other if this solved your problems.

Jeff

Anything I do in Mathxl will eventually crash any browser on my Mac as long as I have Firefox installed. Uninstalling Firefox fixes the issue.

I just tried the new TestGen plugin and downloaded Firefox, and it still crashed the browser. I use Camino and it works fine, although I would prefer Firefox.

Does Firefox automatically open with Rosetta? Because I didn't check but I would prefer not to go through the whole process again.

Sorry about the long wait for a reply...

I've managed to randomly crash Firefox from time to time. However, Safari appears to perform flawlessly (might try that). We are looking into why FireFox can randomly crash. It's a tough one to pinpoint at this time.

Firefox will only open with Rosetta if you explicitly hit CMD-i on the app and select the "Open using Rosetta" checkbox.

Have you tried opening a "TST" file outside the MathXL environment with the browser? Does it crash the same, or does it perform better? If you want, I can set up a demo test you can test through our site. The idea here is to isolate whether it is the MathXL environment or the TestGen Plug-in.

Jeff

Well, I just updated my copy of TestGen to 7.3.0 because the Human Geo test bank wasn't recognized by the previous version. What a big mistake! The application unexpectedly quits consistently when I try doing two things:
1. Expand a test bank chapter to view the questions, and
2. Drag a test bank chapter to the test window.

CRASH. And I haven't gotten further.
HELP. What do I do now?

I've used to just keep Firefox off my machine and just use Camino. I had no problems with MathXL as long as Firefox was not installed. That might just be me though, as other people in my class used Macs and Firefox without problems.

I've actually seen the issue pass with Snow Leopard, but have chosen to stick with Camino as using Firefox seems to take up a ridiculous chunk of memory and slows my computer down too much.
