Editing Tests Exported to RTF Format
One feature of TestGen is the option to export a test to an RTF file, which you can open with a word processor, such as Microsoft Word. The RTF exported test was originally designed so that the layout would match the test you see in TestGen, but this results in an RTF document that is heavily formatted with many section breaks and columns. While simple edits are still possible in the RTF document, more extensive editing is somewhat of a challenge. For this reason, we always encourage instructors to make edits to the test in TestGen before exporting the test to RTF format.
However, for instructors who want to further edit the RTF exported test with a word processor, here are some steps that will get the document ready for editing and remove the section breaks and columns:
- Before you export the test, go to Tools / Preferences / Test Options and on the Display tab, choose to not display answer blanks. Also, on the Answers tab, choose to stack answer choices vertically.
- After you export the test and open the RTF document in Word, select all the text in the document.
- Then choose Find/Replace from the Edit menu. Enter "^b" (section break) in the Find field and "^l" (manual line break, lowercase letter el) in the Replace field. Click Replace All.
- Now your document will look like a mess, but leave all the text selected and choose "Columns" from the Format menu. Choose One column.
- Next, leave all the text selected and do a second Find/Replace. Enter "^l^l" (two manual line breaks) in the Find field and "^t" (tab) in the Replace field. Click Replace All.
- Now you should see the questions aligned properly on the page.
Note: Some non-text items, such as graphics, tables, math expressions, or function plots might need manual tweaking to further clean up the document.
