exponents rendered too low on a line

How do I increase the height of exponents above the baseline?
As it is now, it is hard to differentiate 2^(x-2)+y from 2x-2+y, where the parenthesis is not be there because x-2 is an exponent that is SLIGHTLY higher than the rest of the text.
I'm using TestGen 7.4.1 on a MacBook running MacOS 10.4.11.

I figured it out.
Under Tools I used Global Style Replacement to change everything from Palatino 10pt to Times New Roman 12pt, taking care to not change Style.
Now I'll have to do the same to all my previous tests, and to all my libraries. That's cumbersome.

I found that even though I use the superscript two-box format tool to enter an exponential, highlighting the exponent and checking superscript in the Style menu really helps. Also, I'll make the exponent one font size smaller than the base.
