CAN'T EDIT AND CAN'T MOVE TO A NEW COMPUTER
I've been working around these problems for years because I haven't found a solution.
I'm working on Macs: a MacBook Air running 10.9.5 and a new iMac. I also need to open tests and testbanks on the two PC's at work.
PROBLEMS
1) I can't enable testbank editing for any testbank. I get an error message "The path for the test directory is not valid." (This is via the Preferences tab under Tools.)
I've dumped the software and testbanks, and reinstalled everything multiple times, and I still get the message.
I put the testbanks and tests into the applications folder (on my Macs). I put them on the desktop. I put them on my flashdrive that I take to work. Every one of these places still results in the same error message. I even went so far as to start my own testbank and STILL got the error message when I tried to edit it after closing and reopening it.
2) Every time I move to a new machine, I get an error message that I can't open the test in this particular version of the software. This happens no matter if the test and testbank are on my flash or copied to the hard drive of the new machine. It even happens sometimes when I try to open a test on the same machine on which it was written.
PROBABLY UNRELATED
3) When I export to PDF, the answer key is exported too. I'm not the only one: one faculty member sent a pdf over to our Print Shop and it printed several hundred tests, all with the answers on the back.

(1) You should not store
(1) You should not store Tests/Testbanks in the application folder. Do you have the following paths to Tests/Testbanks on your system:
These are the default directories TestGen likes to store into. If they don't exists, you should create them and try again. If you still have the error, you'll need to clear out the invalid path. The easiest way is to "Reset TestGen" (Tools->Reset TestGen). Note that this will reset all your preferences back to the default settings, including paths.
(2) Are you running the TestGen application from the flash drive or computer hard drive? If so, this will not work reliably. What version of TestGen are you using on each machine?
(3) In TestGen 7.6.4, go to "Tools->Preferences->Test Options" and click the "Key" tab. Disable the "Show answer key" option before you print the final test to distribute to students.
